Our Imperfect Lives--Eating

I wanted to write a few posts about how imperfect we are. It's so easy when writing a blog to make our lives seems so wonderful and perfect all of the time, but the reality isn't so.

Today's post will feature some information about our sometimes less-than-perfect eating habits.

In our house, we make a point of choosing healthy and low-fat foods, eating a variety of foods (imagine the food pyramid, if you would), drinking a lot of water and milk, avoiding junk food often, and trying new foods when we can.
But, like I said, we mess up from time to time and I'm not going to lie and say we don't.

Here are some examples of our "bad" eating habits. Please note this does not reflect our normal eating.

  • Sometimes Brady eats pop tarts for breakfast
  • My boys never have snacks (not even healthy ones)
  • Sometimes my boys drink filtered water, cold from the fridge (instead of tap water, which is much better for them)
  • I've been known to eat animal crackers in bed
  • Microwaved hot dogs make a quick lunch
  • Sometimes I let Brady lick off the egg beaters when making cookies
  • We never buy "organic" (except from the Farmer's Market)---it's way too expensive!
  • I often let Logan eat TONS of cheerios when we go for walks.
  • Sometimes we buy chocolate milk
I'm sure there are plenty more "bad" eating habits that we have from time to time, but that's all I can think of for now.

I'm also pretty proud of some of our "good" eating habits.
Peter and I have lost a combined total of 45 lbs. since May ( 35 lbs. for him, and 10 lbs. for me). We made a decision to eat healthy back then and we've managed to make some real lifestyle changes since then.
I know that I'll be gaining my weight back soon, but with healthy eating habits, I am hopeful to lose it again quickly too. After all, I hear this gets harder with each baby :).

Since I really don't want to make this blog a place to brag about how perfect our family is, I am not going to talk too much about the "good" habits we have. I'm sure you can imagine how it looks to eat healthy :).

I know there are plenty of people out there following the new trends to not drink cow's milk and to eat only organic and natural foods, but as for our family, we are not buying into those ideas just yet. I refuse to live in fear of being forever harmed by what I eat (especially if it's in my fruit, veggies, or milk--which are natural foods). After all, as Christians we must believe that God is ultimately in control, right?

And, even with our new and healthy eating, I assure you there will be room for some of our deep-fried favorites at the fair this weekend!

Yippee! It's so refreshing to finally read a blog by a mother that doesn't talk about the "dangers" of normal everyday food. Sounds to me like you guys are a normal, regular, wonderful family that is enjoying life rather than stifling it.
Amen that God is in control!
